Australian Staghorn Crest

Inspired by Platycerium species that grow as epiphytes in the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and eastern Australia, this work of art captures the way its living counterparts naturally perch on tree trunks and branches, gathering light and moisture from the air rather than from soil.

An organically contoured driftwood base is treated as the “host tree,” providing an irregular, faceted surface that visually anchors its setting while echoing the fern’s wild origins. A crown of antler‑like fronds emerge outward in multiple planes, with lobed, bifurcated tips and slight undulation to honor the kinetic quality of living fronds in filtered canopy light. Tones are calibrated to the soft, silvery greens characteristic of mature staghorns, with subtle value shifts along the veins to maintain realism at close range.
